S. Thomaston meeting to focus on salt marsh

SOUTH THOMASTON — Pollution affecting the health of the Weskeag River and its shellfish as well as a project to restore portions of the river’s salt marsh areas will be the subject of a presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the South Thomaston Municipal Building.

In an effort to open previously closed clam flats to commercial shellfish harvesting, surveys to identify sources of pollution were completed in 1996 and 1997. DEP staff will focus on findings regarding nonpoint sources of pollution that affect the Weskeag. The presentation will provide further insights on what can be done to clean up these sources and to provide for the continued health of the river and its resources.

In order to restore the Weskeag’s salt marsh areas by restricting tidal flow in previously drained areas, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has initiated a restoration program. Fish and Wildlife staff will discuss details of the program, outline the techniques used in this effort and provide information on the project’s progress.
