The coyote is a smart animal and can kill a cat if he gets a chance. But if there is a tree around, the cat will go for it. My girl friend and her neighbor lost their cat and it wasn’t a coyote. I’ve studied wildlife since I was 12 years old. And I can read their tracks.
What I saw in back of her house were the tracks of a fisher. I’ve seen them in the sand and in the snow. The fisher can also kill a fawn deer. A cat is no match for a fisher. He is as good on the ground as he is in a tree. If he can outrun a squirrel, it wouldn’t do any good for a cat to climb a tree. He is one of the largest members of the weasel family located around here, at six to eight pounds.
The wolverine — which isn’t found around here — is the largest of the weasel family at about 40 pounds. Harold E. MacRae Addison
