ORONO – Chris Monberg, Orono High School’s junior right wing, is making a habit of scoring game-winning goals.
Monberg broke a 2-2 tie with 5:42 left to give the Red Riots a 4-2 high school hockey victory over Winslow at Alfond Arena Monday.
“I’m pretty lucky, to tell you the truth,” said Monberg, whose game-winner came off a second rebound.
“Eric Powers took a shot and the goalie [Jon Taylor] got his pad on it,” said Monberg. “The goalie rolled over on his side and got his glove on the rebound. He made a great save. I think Tommy Hite took that shot. I was following it up, and I stuffed it home. I put it under his glove.”
Monberg also scored the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 win over John Bapst a week ago.
Jamie Brooker capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 37 seconds remaining for the 8-1 Riots.
Brooker’s goal capped a four-goal third period that was inspired by a pep talk by Orono coach Greg Hirsch, according to Monberg.
“He gave us a Vince Lombardi quote about what winning is all about. It was real inspirational,” said Monberg.
Ryan Siviski’s second-period power-play goal staked 4-2-2 Winslow to a 1-0 lead, but Noah Lundy tied it off a Tom Hite assist 3:41 into the third period and Monberg scored a shorthanded goal 20 seconds later.
Nick McCann tied it again with help from Siviski.
Stuart Cady made 20 saves for Orono, while Taylor finished with 28 for the Raiders.
