Fire chief in Wells tapped to become state fire marshal

WELLS — After 27 years with fire departments in Old Town and Wells, Fire Chief John Dean will be moving on to become the new state fire marshal.

“I won’t be responding to fires while they’re actually still burning,” Dean said of his new job as supervisor of the 17-member office that investigates fires throughout the state.

Dean said he was notified last week of his appointment to succeed Ladd Alcott, who served two years as fire marshal before stepping down to his previous post as assistant fire marshal.

Dean, who begins his new duties next month, said he doesn’t expect to miss the daily on-site element of his current job.

“Well, I’ve been doing it for 27 years, so I think it will be a nice change of focus,” he said. “I kind of welcome the change.”
