Mack, Northeastern too strong for Bears> UMaine drops game to former coach Keeling

BOSTON – Ty Mack had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Northeastern to an 84-73 win over Maine in an America East basketball game Sunday at Cabot Gym.

Lamont Clark added a career-high 16 points for the Huskies (6-4, 2-0 in America East), who won their third straight game. Fred Meeks led Maine (4-8, 1-3) with 24 points.

Northeastern led 40-28 at halftime and started the second half with a 13-6 run for its largest lead of the afternoon at 53-34 with 14:50 to play. Maine responded by going on a 25-15 run over the next eight minutes to pull within 65-59 with 6:25 left. But the Black Bears would get no closer as a 3-pointer by Terry Kringe ignited an 11-1 Husky spurt that pushed the lead back 76-60 with 3:26 remaining.

After the teams traded baskets early on, Northeastern used a 10-3 run to establish a 20-12 edge midway through the first half. Harold Miller had eight of his 15 points before the half as Northeastern took a 12-point lead at the break. Miller finished with six field goals in eight attempts and a team-high five assists.

Marcus Wills, a former Northeastern player who is in his first season at Maine, added 17 points for the Bears in his first appearance against the Huskies. Allen Ledbetter chipped in with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Meeks scored more than 20 for the 11th time in 12 games this season.

Mack recorded his second straight double-double and scored in double figures for the 29th time in his last 31 games. Marcus Blossom, a freshman guard, netted 10 points off the bench for the Huskies.

Rudy Keeling, who coached for eight seasons at Maine, ran his record to 2-1 against his former team.

Huskies take USM Invitational

The University of Southern Maine Huskies, entering the weekend with one victory all season, defeated Thomas College and Husson College to win the 1998 Husky Invitiational over the weekend.

The Huskies won the championship by defeating Husson College of Bangor 63-58 on Sunday. In Sunday’s consolation game, Wheaton College of Norton, Mass.,defeated Thomas of Waterville, 78-73.

In the championship game, the Huskies overcame a 12-point, second-half defecit to defeat the Braves. Southern Maine’s Mike Fennessy scored 12 points during a 17-6 run which pulled the Huskies with two points. USM took control from there to claim the title.

Fennessy led USM with a game-high 27 points, including five 3-point field goals. Jim Cole added 12 points and Frank Billings tossed in 11.

Chris Funk paced Husson with 18 points, while Brad Olson added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

In the consolation game, Dave Pransky’s 18 points led Wheaton to the win over Thomas.

Lloyd Palmer and Justin Lefkowski added 17 and 16 points respectively for Wheaton. Scott Raymond led Thomas of Waterville with 19 points. Ryan Cilley contributed 14 points and Tyler Graves and John Pokrywkra added 11 apiece.

Husson defeated Wheaton College 83-67 Saturday to advance to the championship game, while Southern Maine topped Thomas 91-62.

MCI Postgrads to play Milford

At Pittsfield tonight, the Maine Central Institute Postgrads will face a formidable foe when it goes against Milford Academy and guard Zach Marbury. Marbury is the brother of Stephon Marbury of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Huskies of Pittsfield, 16-0, will face the Connecticut team, which is 8-3, at 7 p.m..

At Fredericton, New Brunswick, Kelly Dow scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Husson College of Bangor to the win.

Emily Walker added 15 points for the Braves. Carrie Cram provided 10 points off the bench.

Bonny Munn led the University of New Brunswick with 15 points. Charlene Woolaver added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
