Bar Harbor receives gift of infrared cameras

BAR HARBOR — Town firefighters are counting two new thermal-imaging cameras among their Christmas gifts from local residents.

Assistant Fire Chief Lyman Kane said the cameras operate on an infrared light system that allows firefighters to locate people in smoke-filled buildings.

Each piece of the high-tech equipment carries a price tag of $16,000 to $18,000, and the department received the funds to purchase them just after Christmas. Ruth and Tristan Colket of Bar Harbor and Bryn Mawr, Pa., donated the money for one of the cameras, and the other is a gift from Charlotte Bordeaux of Bar Harbor, Kane said.

Other town residents also contributed to the fire department’s fund-raising campaign. As of Sunday, the department didn’t have a final tally on the donations, the assistant chief said.

Firefighters expect to take delivery of the cameras within the next week, he said.
