In Tuesday’s edition (BDN, Dec. 30), we read with great interest the letter by Jennifer Johnson of Deer Isle. Her concerns are shared by all us whose lives have been touched by mental illness. It is clear from the article to which she refers, and to many others, that some staff of the Bangor Daily News suffer from an affliction far greater and more damaging to our society than what they are reporting on: ignorance. What is needed is a greater understanding and more compassion for those who suffer from mental illness.
Headlines and story lines that equate mental illness with murder or any other crime are hurtful and damaging. Perhaps the BDN reporters and staff and all media could make a New Year’s resolution: to educate themselves in the area of mental illness and report more responsibly and compassionately.
