PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sports Museum of New England apparently has chosen Providence over several Massachusetts cities for its new location.
Brian Dowling, the museum’s executive director, said he hopes to move the main exhibit to the Fogarty Building on Fountain Street as soon as the spring.
Mayor Vincent Cianci has been negotiating with Dowling for months to win the museum for the downtown redevelopment effort. The Department of Human Services has offices in the city-owned building, but, prompted by Cianci, has agreed to move.
Among the cities that expressed interest in the museum were Salem and Worcester, Mass.; Portland, Maine, and New Haven, Conn.
