1 found dead after high-speed chase> Car pursued from Glenburn to Brewer

BREWER — One person was found dead, apparently the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and two others were in police custody after a high-speed car chase Wednesday evening.

The chase ended shortly before 7 p.m. on the offramp of Interstate 395 in Brewer when the car, with three occupants, struck a guardrail and stopped. State police officials initially reported that the accident caused injuries to one of the people in the car, but later indicated that the wounds were self-inflicted.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said he couldn’t identify the dead person or say that the person had died of self-inflicted wounds.

The car that led police on a high-speed chase was a 1995 Hyundai Accent registered to Thomas R. and Wanda Gardner of 14 Kings Court in Brewer. Sarah Gardner, 18, was apparently one of the occupants in the car.

Shortly after the car crashed, police handcuffed a young man and placed him in a waiting cruiser. A young woman then was escorted to a separate cruiser. Both were taken to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, state police reported.

McCausland said three state police detectives were investigating the incident that began earlier that evening in Glenburn.

Investigators with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the state police had gone to a Glenburn residence earlier Wednesday evening to question some people there as part of a continuing investigation, McCausland said.

The people fled with investigators following them. The route taken during the chase included Main Street in Bangor. The car got onto I-395 in Bangor and headed toward Brewer, where it took the 1A offramp that heads to downtown Brewer. Investigators were joined in the chase and at the subsequent crash site by Brewer and Bangor police. The offramp and nearby on ramp were closed off by police cruisers until the Maine Department of Transportation could be called in to put up signs and formally close the ramps to traffic.

Identification of the three occupants of the Hyundai was not available at press time.
