Hiring out of state

I would like to respond to an article that was published in the Bangor Daily News’ Dec. 13-14 issue, concerning the deer herd reduction on Monhegan Island. What I read truly and thoroughly upset me, as I am sure it did many Maine sportsmen.

Why does the state of Maine have to hire out-of-state wildlife management to take care of a problem that could have been resolved within the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

I have lived in Maine all my life, and have hunted for more than 30 years. I know the numbers of Maine sportsmen who could have accomplished this job.

We have people out of work who could have done the job, but the state chose to send our money out of state to get it done. That’s $2,500 that needlessly left the state. The DIFW could have chosen a person from Maine who could have provided this service. Permits could have been issued to legally cover any special equipment that needed to be used.

Why doesn’t the state start utilizing our own resources to take care of such problems? Our own people have the intelligence to accomplish such tasks in a safe, quiet, humane and effective manner. Don Winchester Stockton Springs
