Commissioners get request to improve Chesuncook road

DOVER-FOXCROFT — It appears unlikely that a seasonal resident’s appeal for improvements to the county road in remote Chesuncook Village will be honored.

Richard Rugen of Hope Falls, N.Y., on Tuesday forwarded a letter to Piscataquis County commissioners, asking for improvements to that portion of road that connects the village with the Golden Road. While he said he was not suggesting a paved superhighway, he does want some kind of work done so that he can transport materials and supplies to his property in the village.

Rugen said the road had fallen into an “advanced state of disrepair for a distance of three miles.” He said the last mile into the village is quite passable as is the stretch of roadway from the Golden Road to the so-called parking lot. The connection between the two sections is so bad, however, that ordinary four-wheel drive vehicles cannot make the route, he said.

Chairman Eben DeWitt said it was the understanding of the board that residents in Chesuncook enjoyed the remoteness of the area and had no desire to see road improvements made. He and Commissioners Tony Bartley and Gordon Andrews did agree to pass the request on to the road commissioner in that area to get his input before a response was made to Rugen’s letter.

In other business Tuesday, the commissioners approved the purchase of a 1998 police car from Prouty Ford of Dover-Foxcroft. Although the firm submitted the highest of three bids, the commissioners decided to keep business in Piscataquis County. Prouty Ford’s bid was $20,389, compared to bids of $20,000 from Newport Ford and $19,990 from Chambers Ford in Augusta. It was noted that the latter bid was for a white or blue cruiser. Had this bid been accepted, it would have cost more to have the cruiser painted brown.
