BATH — Bath Iron Works says the sudden cancellation of a warship project is disappointing but should not seriously hurt the shipyard, at least not in the short term.
“It’s a blow to Bath Iron Works but it’s not devastating,” said Rep. Tom Allen, a member of the House National Security Committee.
After a small team at BIW spent two years trying to win a competition to design the Navy’s experimental “arsenal ship,” Navy Secretary John Dalton announced Friday he was canceling the project.
BIW, as part of a group of contractors that included owner General Dynamics’ Groton, Conn., shipyard; Raytheon Electronic Systems of Lexington, Mass.; and Science Applications International Corp. of McLean, Va., was scheduled to submit its final design next month.
Two other groups were vying for the job. One of them included BIW’s arch-rival, Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Miss.
