Waco documentary, discussion slated

A controversial documentary film about the 1993 confrontation between the Branch Davidians and federal agents in Waco, Texas, will be screened in an exclusive weeklong run at the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville.

A discussion of the issues raised by “WACO: The Rules of Engagement” will follow the 6:45 show tonight. Bob Ganem of Bangor, uncle of David Thibodeau, a survivor of the siege and fire at the Branch Davidian compound, will be present along with representatives of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, the Maine Militia and the Maine Citizens to Defend the Bill of Rights. Representatives of the FBI and other concerned agencies have been invited to participate.

The film raises questions about the FBI’s story of events that resulted in the shooting of four federal agents and the fire that claimed 76 men, women and children inside the compound. Sources include Forward Looking InfraRed video shot by the FBI from an overhead aircraft, a home video made during the siege by the Davidians themselves with a camera provided by the FBI, Branch Davidian home movies, and negotiation and 911 tapes.

“WACO: The Rules of Engagement” shows nightly Oct. 17-23 at 6:45 with 2:05 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19. Unrated, the film is 165 minutes long. For more information, call 873-4021.
