Presque Isle to be location of fall literacy conference

PRESQUE ISLE — Four state and national experts on literacy will speak at the Aroostook Literacy Coalition’s fall conference. The daylong event, on Sept. 20 at Northern Maine Technical College in Presque Isle, is entitled “Adult Literacy Standards: A Bridge to the Future.”

Sondra Stein, national director for the National Institute for Literacy’s Equipped for the Future Initiative, will be the keynote speaker.

Also presenting will be Lisa Levinson, a project director at the Center for Adult Learning and Literacy at the University of Maine in Orono; Meta Potts, project director at the National Center for Literacy, Louisville, Ky.; and Silja Kallenbach, director of the New England Literacy Resource Center at World Education in Boston.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and presentations will end at 3:15 p.m. An $8 registration fee will be charged, or $50 per agency. Checks should be made payable to the Aroostook Literacy Coalition and mailed to the ALC at P.O. Box 190, Houlton, ME 04730. Registrations will also be accepted at the door for a fee of $10.
