Weekend thunderstorms damage telephone lines

BANGOR — Sunday’s thunderstorms delivered a delayed punch to telephone service in parts of the Greater Bangor area.

The combination of lightning strikes and wind damage to wires produced about 100 customer calls to NYNEX reporting service problems Sunday, and when some people got to work Monday they discovered their places of business had been affected.

“We took a lot of isolated hits on our network during the storms, which made repairs difficult,” said Peter Reilly, a NYNEX spokesman, late Monday afternoon. “We’ve got three dozen technicians working on the problems. We expect service should be completely restored within 24 hours.”
