YWCA sets forum on race, gender

BANGOR — The Bangor-Brewer YWCA will present a forum titled “Race, Gender and Culture” from 11 a.m. to noon today, at the Bangor-Brewer YWCA at 17 Second St.

The program will be moderated by Anna O’Connell of the YWCA. Panelists for the program are:

Josephine Bright, a professor and author who holds a doctorate in human development, is on leave from Wheelock College. Bright is of African-Caribbean descent.

Gail Dana Sockabasin is assistant director of the Wabanaki Center at the University of Maine. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in health promotion and education.

Rhea Cote Robbins is a writer and community organizer. Born in Waterville, she grew up in the Franco-American neighborhood known as “Down the Plains.” She currently is leader of the Franco-American Women’s Initiative.

Adonis Ferreira was born on the island of Cape Verde off the western coast of Africa. Ferreira attended the University of Massachusetts and holds a bachelor’s degree in African-American studies and a master’s in education. He is assistant dean of multicultural affairs at UM.

Geeta Balakrishnan was born in New Delhi, India. She is currently executive director of BDL Employment and Rehabilitation Services.

The program will be followed by a brown bag luncheon. Tea and coffee will be provided.
