Benefits outweigh risks for most taking hormones

CHICAGO — Nearly all postmenopausal women would live longer by taking hormones, because the heart-protecting benefits far outweigh the slightly increased risk of breast cancer, scientists say.

The conclusion, published in Wednesday’s issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, is based on an analysis of previous research.

Many women take hormone supplements — often in pills combining estrogen and progestin — to ease hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause.
