Package deal goes to pot for siblings> Judge sentences pair for marijuana mailing

BANGOR — A brother and sister from Rangeley were sentenced Monday to two years probation each and were ordered to perform community service for their parts in a scheme to mail 5 pounds of marijuana from Texas to Maine.

Kimberly Morin, 36, and her brother, Lee Morin, 31, earlier pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana. The pleas were recorded at U.S. District Court, Bangor. Each faced a maximum of five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine for the offense which allegedly occurred last April.

Federal sentencing guidelines in use since 1987 would have further reduced prison time to a maximum of six months for the pair. However, U.S. District Judge Morton A. Brody gave the Morins an even lighter sentence than the guidelines suggested. The federal court judge cited the pair’s lack of criminal record and their efforts to rehabilitate themselves since the crime was committed.

Kimberly Morin, a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, pleaded guilty to mailing a 5-pound parcel of marijuana from Texas to the Rangeley home of her brother. She was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service in addition to her probation sentence.

Lee Morin, who allegedly took possession of the package, works in the plumbing business. He is “a man of few words. He has a gentle soul,” said his attorney, Terence Harrigan of Bangor. Harrigan said Morin is aware and “deeply ashamed” of his action and its impact on his family members who live in rural western Maine.

The father of two children, Morin also was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service in addition to probation.

Agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency reportedly intervened when the package was reported as suspicious by the United Parcel Service, which Kimberly Morin used to ship the package from Texas to Maine.
