2 Blue Hill teens jailed after joy ride, car chase

ELLSWORTH — Two Blue Hill 15-year-old males were briefly jailed Sunday night after a prolonged joy ride ending with a low-speed car chase.

The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday when a Blue Hill man reported to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department that his red 1989 Escort had been stolen from his residence on Route 172.

Nearly three hours later, a resident of the Surry portion of the same road said a similar vehicle had left the roadway in front of his home and “spun up” his lawn.

Within a few minutes of that report, around 8 p.m., yet another resident of Route 172 said a vehicle fitting the same description had struck his woodshed. By 9:30 p.m., Sgt. Corey Bagley of the Sheriff’s Department was stopped in Surry by a man who said a similar vehicle had driven into a field by his home on Newbury Neck Road.

Around 11:15 p.m, officer Loren Clarke of the Ellsworth Police Department saw the car on High Street in Ellsworth and tried to stop it. The driver continued back to Route 172 at a slow speed, until two other officers joined the pursuit, at which point the driver of the Escort finally stopped.

The boys were conditionally released from the Hancock County Jail to their parents.
