Domestic rift leads to charges

PRESQUE ISLE — One man is in jail while another is recovering from a serious cut to the hand after a bizarre incident here Friday night.

William Barfield, 35, of Fort Fairfield was charged with aggravated assault after police said he stabbed John Vaillancourt of Presque Isle.

Police said Vaillancourt was treated for the cut at The Aroostook Medical Center and released.

According to police, Vaillancourt was involved in a domestic dispute outside his home on Dyer Street in Presque Isle. Barfield happened to be going by and saw it. He came to the Vaillancourt residence on a bicycle, and an argument occurred between the two men.

Barfield again left the scene and returned in a taxi, bringing a folding knife with a 4-inch blade. Police said that Barfield then cut Vaillancourt’s hand.

Barfield remains in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton after failing to post bail of $2,500 cash or $5,000 with one surety.
