DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Dover-Foxcroft Post Office will hold an anniversary celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, to recognize 100 years of rural free delivery. The event is in conjunction with the Fall Foliage Festival to be held the same day.
The anniversary party will feature an old-style buggy in which mail was delivered. Recollections of retired rural letter carriers and a special pictorial cancellation will be highlights of the ceremony that is open to the public.
A new stamp honoring the tradition of rural letter carriers, which recently was dedicated by Postmaster General Marvin Runyon, will be available for purchase. The stamp is based on a photograph of an early rural carrier with his horse-drawn mail wagon.
