CARIBOU — The Aroostook County administrator recently had some good news for county commissioners.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should end this fiscal year with a healthy surplus, putting us in a good financial condition,” Roland D. Martin told Aroostook County commissioners Wednesday.
Martin had received his year-end audit for Aroostook County’s general fund as of Dec. 31, 1995. Aroostook County ended 1995 with a surplus of $630,529.
In 1995, he said, the county took in more than it anticipated, while spending nearly $500,000 less than it had budgeted.
Of the $630,529 in surplus, Martin said, the 1996 budget anticipated using $285,000 to lower the tax commitment this year. That still left Aroostook County with a surplus of $345,529 when it started operations Jan. 1, 1996.
Again, Martin had good news for county commissioners. “We should end the year in the black, with a good, healthy surplus. This is excellent,” he said.
Aroostook County’s unorganized territory fund was also reported to be in good shape. That fiscal year has not yet been audited because the unorganized territory fund runs on the same fiscal year as the state, which is July 1 to June 30.
