Auction to benefit Augusta museum

AUGUSTA — Donated items from bird carvings, furniture and ceramics to woven items and artwork will be auctioned at noon Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Maine State Museum. More than 165 items will be sold at the fourth annual Made in Maine Auction, a benefit event for the museum.

Among the more pricey items donated are a Windsor chair by Steven Bunn of Bowdoinham, a large double dresser from Moosehead Furniture of Monson, an amethyst-and-tourmaline brooch made especially for the auction by jeweler Shari Howard of Gardiner.

Maine produce baskets will be offered to the more thrifty and a silent auction will be held for items valued under $25. Friends of the Museum have a 16-page catalog of auction items and absentee bids will be welcome.

Among the many attractions will be a $100 gift certificate from D.R. Struck Landscape Nursery, Winthrop, a stained glass kaleidoscope from Port Crafts, Kennebunkport, a full-size cotton blanket from Brahms/Mount Textiles, Hallowell, a Thomas Moser cherry desk clock, an oak sled from Sunkhaze Woodworking, Milford, a 225-piece majogany jigsaw puzzle from Elms Puzzles, Harrison. Garden produce and herbs will be auctioned, also.

The auction began as a way to show Maine’s crafts and manufacturing and has raised from $10,000 to $20,000 for the museum each year.
