Firefighters’ contract

I am writing in regard to the letter of July 17 written by Harry Riley concerning the Bangor firefighters. I am in complete agreement with Riley.

It is an insult to the whole department by not renewing their contract. Because of the fact our son worked on this department, we, his parents, got to know some of these people really well, and they are truly dedicated to their work.

It seems that some people especially within the city government do not seem to understand or care about how much responsibility these people have.

I can tell you from personal experience because my oldest son (who passed away 18 months ago) was very dedicated to his job, and my youngest son who is also a firefighter is very dedicated to his job.

I guess the council doesn’t seem to stop to think that any time these people get a call, their life is on the line, not knowing whether they will be coming back or not.

Hopefully the city council will get together and finally agree to give these firefighters a new contract which is long overdue. Virginia Mullen Eastport
