PITTSFIELD — Pittsfield VFW Post 9955 broke ground last week for its new post home on Peltoma Avenue.
The post leased the property from the town of Pittsfield and, with a lot of help from local businesses and residents, members expect to be in their new home by fall.
According to Commander Douglas Deering, roof trusses, insulation, kitchen equipment — including a stove and refrigerator — and electrical wiring, are still needed. Deering said “all donations, corporate or private, of building supplies, equipment, money or time, will be greatly appreciated by the VFW members.”
Deering said those who have been instrumental in getting the project started include Sen. Alton “Chuck” Cianchette, Kenneth Cianchette, Jerry Howe and the Unity College maintenance staff, Ouellette Plumbing, Chuck Creasy and VFW members.
The 68-member post has been holding its meetings in a member’s garage. A new home will mean that barbecues, suppers and renting the hall will be just some of the fund-raisers that will eventually pay off the post mortgage.
Anyone wishing to make a donation may call Deering at 487-9267 or Bob Tibbetts at 487-3176.
