Sumner boys to challenge Brewer for PVC title

Upstart Sumner of East Sullivan, a Class C power, will try to knock off the Class A indoor track state champion Brewer boys when 20 schools gather at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Penobscot Valley Conference Track and Field Championships at the University of Maine’s Beckett Family Track Complex in Orono.

The girls meet looks to be a three-way battle between Class A Brewer and Bangor and Class B Hampden.

This year, for the first time, the PVC meet will be scored eight places deep. First place will still receive 10 points, but the progression for each place will now be 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Sumner will pit its frontline power against the depth of the Witches. The Tigers are paced by distance ace Parker Pruett, Emil Thomann in the 400- and 800-meter races, and sprinter Chris Wentworth. Pruett’s showdowns with Ellsworth distance star Joey Luchini should provide some of the meet’s more intriguing races.

Pruett topped Luchini in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at last Saturday’s Hancock County Championships, but Luchini is a proven performer and last year’s Class B outdoor mile champ.

Brewer will answer with a strong jumping and sprinting corps led by University of Maine-bound senior Peter Phelan. Phelan is the top seed in the triple jump, 110 hurdles, and 300 hurdles. Hurdler Brian Goodness and jumper James Clark will look to provide more points for the Witches.

In the girls meet, Bangor boasts junior jumping star Sarah Parcak, junior distance ace Hollie Harnish, and senior Jill Svoboda in the 400.

Hampden has been solid across the board during the regular season and will be led by thrower Shilo Marden, sprinter/hurdler Karen Bright, and jumper Amanda Burrill.

The Witches are led by a distance corps paced by freshman Rachael Bodkin-Rubino. Senior hurdler/jumper Rachel Young and freshman Jen Puiia are other key performers for Brewer. Puiia will run, but is a question mark after missing two meets with mononucleosis.

Dark horse Old Town may play a spoiler role, relying heavily on speedster Kim Chaisson and jumper Brooke Birmingham.
