PORTLAND — Sens. Olympia Snowe and Bill Cohen Wednesday said Majority Leader Bob Dole’s resignation is a loss to the Senate but a gain for the nation.
“His departure from the Senate will allow him to convey the message of the Republican Party — less regulation, lower taxes, more accountability — to the American people without being sabotaged by the procedural roadblocks of the Senate,” Cohen said.
“Bob Dole is a giant in the history of the United States Senate,” said Snowe.
Snowe said the announcement is a powerful signal that Dole intends to focus all his energies on becoming the next president of the United States.
