Drexel eliminates UMaine> Bears’ catcher Dow named all-tourney

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jess Mattie scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th inning as the Drexel Dragons eliminated the University of Maine 7-6 at the North Atlantic Conference softball tournament Saturday at Archie Post Field.

Boston Universtiy, behind the pitching of tournament MVP Audrey West, won two games on Sunday to claim the NAC title. The Terriers beat Hofstra 8-1 in the championship game.

Maine came back from at 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-6 with three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. Kelly Dow, an All-Tourney selection, brought home the game-tying run with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.

In the 10th, Mattie singled with one out. She was sacrificed to second then scored on back-to-back wild pitches by freshman Jennifer Burton.

Maine advanced the tying run to third base in the bottom of the 10th, but was unable to plate the runner.

Maine coach Janet Anderson said the weather may have caused Burton’s wild pitches. Rain fell during the last two innings, and the remainder of Saturday’s schedule was pushed to Sunday after the Maine loss.

“I would say that it was because her hand was wet or the ball was wet,” Anderson said of the final wild pitch. “The ball hit and took one of those high bounces.”

Dow led the Bears with two doubles, a single and five RBIs. Her five RBIs set a NAC record for RBIs in a game and tied the individual tournament record for RBIs.

Burton allowed one run on three hits over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Kathryn Murphy doubled and Mary Wells singled twice for the Bears.

Anderson said Drexel took advantage of its breaks better than the Bears did.

“It seemed like if there was going to be a bounce of the ball, it was going to go their way,” Anderson said. “What luck we had was all bad. That’s no excuse, because often you make your own luck but everything that happened, we seemed to get bit in some way.”
