Howlers win `C’ east title

Dexter halted Penobscot Valley’s consecutive win streak at 72 nearly three weeks ago, but the Tigers wound up in a familiar place at the Eastern Maine Class C wrestling championships at Madawaska Saturday.

The Howlers collected four individual championships and 167.5 points for the win, 29.5 points ahead of the second-place Tigers, whose wrestlers left the meet with three individual titles.

It was the Howlers’ first EM Class C title because this was the event’s inaugural year. Previously, Class C teams had to compete against Class B teams for the Class B EM title.

The Howlers’ Matt Lindsay won a 9-0 decision against Dexter’s Adam Gudroe for the 103-pound title, followed by Chris Sirois’ 1:16 pinning of Mattanawcook Academy’s James Kenny.

Dexter struck back with a win from 119-pounder Ken Welch who won a 4-2 decision against PVHS’ Justin Thompson, and Sean Cole pinned Foxcroft Academy’s C.J. Ewer for the 125-pound crown in 3:53.

Darren Thibodeau earned the Howlers’ next points when he pinned the Tigers’ 130-pound Wayne Weeks in 1:31, and Wes Dube collected the 189-pound crown with a 1:12 pin against Stearns’ Jerod McLaughlin.

Dexter’s Joe Cox won a 12-0 major decision against Mattanawcook’s Lenny Martin for the 135-pound title to round out the Tigers’ titles haul.

The third-place Lynx collected individual titles from Josh Ryder, who dominated Foxcroft’s Dwayne Smart for the 140-pound win, and Bub Severance, who pinned the Ponies’ Aaron Robinson in 1:12 for the 171-pound win.

Foxcroft’s Travis Hodgdon pinned the Howlers’ Ricky Cyr in 5:20 for the 160-pound title and Abe Cookson won the 215-pound class with a pin against Madawaska’s Jason Jandreau in 1:39.

The Owls’ Mitchell Dube won a 5-1 deicision against Penobscot Valley’s Henry Harper in the 145-pound class, and Ben Cyr took the heavyweight title with a 15-5 decision against John Bapst’s Kevin Cirone.

Calais’ Jerry James took the Blue Devils’ only title with a 3:05 pin against John Fournier of Madawaska in the 152-pound class.

In the Eastern Maine Class A meet at Mount Blue, Mount Ararat of Topsham wrapped up the title with 179.5 points to Oxford Hills’ 156 points. Caribou finished third with 154 points and two individual titles.

Jeremy Brown won a 5-1 decision against Mount Ararat’s Pete Coffin in the 103-pound division, and Brandon Junkins pinned the Eagles’ Jim M103-pound division, and Brandon Junkins pinned the Eagles’ Jim Morrell in 1:35 for the 215-pound title.

Ryan McCullough lost a 23-13 decision to Oxford Hills’ Chad Herrick in the 130-pound division’s championship round.

Fourth-place Gardiner garnered three individual titles at the Vikings’ expense.
