Entertainment center suspected in fire that ruins Pittsfield home > Firefighters had investigated odor of burning TV the night before

PITTSFIELD — A malfunction in a television-entertainment center is the suspected cause of a fire that destroyed the home of Charles Baker, a deputy with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, and Michele Taylor on Sibley Pond Road in Pittsfield Monday morning.

Pittsfield firefighters were called to the home after 11 a.m. when Taylor discovered flames in the living room. According to Lt. Jeff Boutwell of the PFD, Taylor said she was in the bedroom when she heard popping sounds coming from the living room area. Finding flames going up the curtains behind the entertainment center, she was able to rescue a pet rabbit and exit the home. Taylor also was treated for smoke inhalation at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield and released.

Firefighters also were called to the home Sunday night for a suspected electrical fire. According to Boutwell, there was an odor in the air of a television burning, but nothing was found.

On arrival Monday, firefighters found the 1 1/2-story home fully in flames. Fire departments from Pittsfield, Canaan, Hartland and St. Albans arrived to assist. Newport firefighters stood by at the Pittsfield fire station. Firefighters remained at the scene until after 3 p.m.

The home and its contents were a total loss. The couple will be staying with family in Canaan.
