Land use panel sets meetings on comprehensive plan rewrite

AUGUSTA — The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission will sponsor eight meetings throughout the state beginning in January to obtain public comment for rewriting its comprehensive land use plan.

The plan is LURC’s blueprint for planning and regulating development in the 10.5 million acres of unorganized territories under the agency’s jurisdiction.

Meetings begin with information workshops from 3-5 p.m. followed by public hearings at 6 p.m. Meeting dates and locations are:

Wednesday, Jan. 17, Jeff’s Banquet and Convention Center, Brewer;

Thursday, Jan. 18, Keddy’s Motor Inn, Presque Isle;

Wednesday, Jan. 24, Rockland, Tradewinds Motor Inn;

Thursday, Jan. 25, East Machias Municipal Building;

Wednesday, Jan. 31, Ramada Inn Conference Center, Portland;

Thursday, Feb. 1, Rangeley Inn, Rangeley;

Wednesday, Feb. 7, Best Western-Heritage Motor Inn, Millinocket;

Thursday, Feb. 8, Rockwood Community Center.

For information regarding these meetings, contact the LURC office at 287-2631.

“The main issue related to growth in LURC’s jurisdiction is not the amount of development taking place, but where the development is occurring,” said LURC Director John Williams. “Through our revised comprehensive land use plan, we hope to promote a more sustainable growth pattern while protecting the area’s outstanding recreational, wildlife and forest resource values.”
