FEMA funds targeted at Penobscot County

BANGOR — The Penobscot County local board of the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program will receive a projected $68,451 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. While the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s funding has not been passed, officials expect the pending congressional appropriation legislation to designate $100 million to supplement and extend emergency food and shelter programs.

The local board, with John Bragg of N.H. Bragg & Sons as chairman, will determine how the funds awarded to Penobscot County will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must be nonprofit; have an accounting system or fiscal agent approved by the local board; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and-or shelter programs; and, if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying organizations are urged to apply.

United Way of Eastern Maine administers this program for Penobscot County as a service to the community. Last year 14 local emergency food and shelter programs were responsible for providing 35,938 meals and 7,578 nights of lodging as a result of FEMA funding.
