Ex-highway worker’s suit names Limestone

LIMESTONE — A former highway worker has sued the town, claiming his job was eliminated in retaliation for events that happened years ago.

Paul Durepo, who is the town’s volunteer fire chief, claims that the town used the budgetary process to eliminate his job, according to a civil complaint filed in Aroostook County Superior Court.

Durepo’s position with the highway department was one of five positions eliminated three years ago when the town was reducing the size of its work force. The effort was in preparation for the scheduled closing of Loring Air Force Base and the departure of thousands of military personnel.

Durepo’s complaint stated that the town selectmen’s board used “harassment and intimidation” in an attempt to force Durepo to resign his position with the highway department. He further claimed that the Police Department was used to “stop Mr. Durepo for no valid nor lawful reason for the sole purpose of attempting to harass and intimidate.”

In court documents, Durepo claims a selectman attempted to prevent him from fighting and controlling a fire. The documents offered no detail.

The documents provided no detail on the events years ago that allegedly resulted in the claimed harassment.

“The intimidation and harassment have been occurring since 1992,” the complaint stated.

Durepo also contended that his state and federal consitutional rights had been violated.

As a result, Durepo claims he has suffered pain, mental anguish, anxiety, emotional distress and loss of quality of life.

Durepo asked for an unspecified amount of damages, including punitive damages, and the costs of bringing the suit.
