Tired truckers session draws Maine mother

ARLINGTON, Va. — The government can write laws and impose rules, but keeping tired truck drivers off the road comes down to personal responsibility, Transportation Secretary Federico Pena said Thursday.

“You can tell a person: `This is the time for you to sleep,’ but it doesn’t do any good unless he sleeps,” Pena told a conference on managing human fatigue in transportation.

Among his hundreds of listeners was Daphne Izer of Lisbon, Maine, for whom the issue of fatigued drivers resulted in tragedy two years ago.

Izer, a founder of Parents Against Tired Truckers, lost her 17-year-old son, Jeff, who was killed with three friends when their disabled car was struck by a truck alongside a Maine highway.

She believes the trucker was working while fatigued, though he was not charged in the deaths.
