Lynx shot down by Georges Valley goal

Nicki Vose’s goal with less than seven minutes to play gave No. 5 Georges Valley of Thomaston an Eastern Maine Class C field hockey quarterfinal victory over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon.

In other Class C action, top-seeded Hall-Dale was upended by No. 8 Winthrop 2-1. Winthrop will travel to Georges Valley for next Wednesday’s Class C semifinal.

Class B wasn’t much kinder to the higher seeds as No. 5 Hampden Academy battled No. 4 Foxcroft Academy through a pair of overtimes and into corners for a 2-1 win. Old Town, which faces Hampden in the Class B semifinals, protected its top ranking with a 3-1 win over Nokomis.

In Class A, Brewer lost to No. 5 Skowhegan 3-0 and will play Cony in Augusta next. Cony crushed Oxford Hills of South Paris 5-1.

Class A

Cony 5, Oxford Hills 1

At Augusta, Kathy Roderick scored the Rams’ first two goals in the first half which was all top-seeded Cony needed while cruising to the victory.

Sarah Morrill added two second-half goals for 15-0 Cony. Amy Vachon chipped in with a goal and Jasmin Curtis made 14 saves.

Kristi York scored a goal in the first half for Oxford Hills. Erin Morrison made 22 saves. The Vikings finished at 4-10-1.

Class B

Old Town 3, Nokomis 1

At Old Town, Denise Case’s unassisted goal 16 minutes into the first half broke a 1-1 tie for the Indians.

Case added a second goal in the second half for 12-1-2 Old Town. Mitzi Clark gave Old Town a 1-0 lead with her score 1:34 into the game on a Kelley Emerson assist. Christy Danielson made five saves on nine shots.

For 6-7-2 Nokomis, Sara Davis tied the game at 12 minutes into the first half with her unassisted goal. Jenn Crudell made six saves on 10 shots.

Class C

Geo. Valley 1, Mattanawcook 0

At Lincoln, Nicki Vose scored off a feed from Jessica Shepard with less than seven minutes to play to give No. 5 Georges Valley the victory.

The soft shot came off a penalty corner and trickled past Mattanawcook Academy goalie Angie Brawn who stopped six of the Thomaston team’s 20 shots.

Stephanie Steele preserved the shutout with three saves.

Georges Valley will take a 7-6-2 record into the semifinals. Mattanawcook finished 5-6-4.
