Coastal Hymners group plans initial meeting

ROCKPORT — An organizational meeting for a new choral group, Coastal Hymners, being developed for people interested in singing hymns and hymn-based anthems, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road. All voice types are invited to participate. Sight singing is not required; however, one should have the ability to sing on pitch. No auditions will be held. There will be a fee for music.

Many kinds of hymns will be included in this group’s activities — standard hymns of European origin, Gregorian chant and chant-based English versions, metrical psalms, American hymns including Southern harmony, folk hymns, black spirituals, gospel songs and contemporary hymns. Those chosen will be based on the interests of the group and its leader.

The group leader will be Joseph Elliott, church musician at Nativity Lutheran Church, which, as part of its outreach program, is providing Coastal Hymns the use of its facilities for their rehearsal site.

For more information, call Joseph Elliott at 236-8808.
