Police burrow in bog to land Rockport loot

ROCKPORT — Digging a little deeper Saturday helped Rockport police unearth a buried cache of loot from a burglary the night before.

Responding to a burglary at the Rockport Green Grocer and acting on a hunch, Rockport officers found tools and all other items taken wrapped in plastic and buried in a bog off Mill Street.

The break-in at the Route 90 grocery occurred sometime Friday night and was reported to police early Saturday. The burglar apparently broke a door lock to enter a trailer used as an office and smashed open the cash register, taking about $10 in petty cash. The burglar then entered a shed, making off with a chain saw and tools worth about $1,000.

After police found fresh tire marks from a four-wheel-drive truck at the scene, Officer Aaron Bailey began searching back roads for further signs of the vehicle. A few hundred yards down a dirt road near Mill Street, Bailey found an inner tube, one of the stolen items, and a footprint leading into a bog.

About one mile into the bog, Bailey came to a rock with a pile of brush behind it. Clearing away the brush, he uncovered a plastic sheet with all of the stolen items wrapped inside.

Police Chief Forest Doucette, who accompanied Bailey on the search, said Monday there is a suspect in the burglary.
