Drought forces GNP to close its land to open fires

MILLINOCKET — Extremely dry conditions have forced Great Northern Paper Co. to close its lands to all open fires at its campground sites until further notice. Fires generated by propane at the company’s campground sites will still be allowed.

The ban on open fires at Great Northern’s camp sites affects the company’s land along or near the West Branch of the Penobscot River from Millinocket to Quebec and its other lands throughout northern Maine.

Great Northern Paper, the state’s largest private landowner, with 2.1 million acres, placed a ban on all open fires after consulting with the Maine Forest Service, which has also placed a similar ban on lands it manages.
