Community of Clinton to mark bicentennial

CLINTON — Two hundred years ago, the plantation of Hancock petitioned to become the 101st town in Maine. The name was changed to Clinton, to honor a Revolutionary War general, and the new town was incorporated.

The town hugging the Sebasticook River will celebrate its bicentennial this summer with a week of events and activities beginning Saturday, July 29, and continuing until Aug. 5.

The events include a giant flea market and lawn sale at the Clinton Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 29; church services on two Sundays, July 30 and Aug. 6; public breakfasts, luncheons and suppers; a home movie and ice cream gathering; an encore performance of Clinton’s bicentennial historical tableaux and musical performance; and a reunion of all who attended Clinton High School.

The Clinton Historical Society is selling cookbooks, T-shirts, sweat shirts, caps, mugs and a new history of Clinton. The Clinton High School Reunion Committee also has souvenir canvas bags and 1995 reunion badges.

Organizer Jon Whitten suggests that those items be ordered in advance.

During the week’s celebration, a history house and registration office will be open daily in the new 4-H and Grange Exhibition Hall at the fairgrounds. Tickets, name tags and ordered items can be picked up there during the week.

Anyone having items pertaining to the history of Clinton is asked to place them on display. They will be protected while on display and will be returned at the completion of the celebration. Call Mrs. Lundbeck at 426-9528 to make arrangements to display items.

For more information about the celebration, call Blair Frost, 426-2561, or Jon Whitten, 474-8287.
