BIDDEFORD — An 18-month-old transplant recipient who was located with just minutes to spare when a liver became available was recovering Monday at a Boston hospital.
Amanda Sue Little was in critical condition at Boston Children’s Hospital, a spokesman said Monday.
Local police were told they had 30 minutes to contact Little’s family after a liver that appeared to be a perfect match was suddenly made available Saturday night.
Officer William Gaumont was dispatched to the Littles’ address, where nobody was home. After failing to turn up any leads, officers made public announcements at the La Kermesse festival and called every “Little” in the phone book.
With 10 minutes to spare, dispatchers reached relatives in Kennebunk who said the family had just left their home. Gaumont spotted the family on the road, stopped their car, and took the toddler and her mother, Delina Little, to a waiting ambulance with three minutes to spare.
If the family was not contacted, the liver would have gone to someone else on the waiting list, officials said.
