State DOT work crews repairing Route 17 bridge in Union

UNION — Maine Department of Transportation crews are carrying out emergency repairs on Bessey Bridge, closing one lane to Route 17 traffic on the Common Road over the St. George River.

Some deterioration of a section of the bridge deck was found by inspectors. Repairs will be completed by the end of the week, DOT officials said.

The department also is developing a project to replace the entire bridge deck, which has deteriorated, but construction will not begin until 1996. The steel-beam and concrete structure was built in 1936.
