Prices high for Canadian lobster

NEW GLASGOW, Nova Scotia — Lobstermen were happy, but retailers were crying the blues as the Nova Scotia lobster season opened this week with high prices.

Catches were low when fishermen hauled in their traps Wednesday, but with dockside prices up to $5.75 per pound Canadian, few were worried.

Buyers, however, felt differently.

“The price is way too high,” said Bud MacAuley of Walkerville.

MacAuley said he doesn’t understand what’s happening because three years ago, when the catch was the highest ever, the price was still high.

The high dockside price was translating into retail prices of as much as $7.50 Canadian a pound for markets. And that meant poor sales.

“I don’t think we are going to sell a lot early,” said Carolyn Gunning of the Lobster Pot in Lyons Brook.

Dave Annis, a buyer in nearby Caribou, said the biggest haul from one boat on opening day was 85 pounds. A few years back the number would probably be 900 lobsters.

“It’s low for the start,” he said.
