Cause of power outage unknown

ELLSWORTH — The cause of a power outage Tuesday morning that affected homes and businessess from Machias to Stonington is unknown, according to a spokesman for Bangor Hydro-Electric Co.

Rhonda Gopan said Tuesday evening that 40,000 customers along the coastline of Washington and Hancock counties lost power for up to 90 minutes. Communities affected included Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island.

Those that receive power from a major transmission line out of Veazie were affected, Gopan said. Power was restored intermittently over the 90-minute span.

Although power company workers looked for a cause for the outage, none had been found by the end of the day. The usual causes for a power outage of that range were apparently not the culprit on Tuesday, Gopan explained.

She said the company plans to conduct a helicopter survey on Wednesday, flying over the lines to search for anything unusual that could have caused the problem.
