Two injured in truck collision in Ashland

ASHLAND — A Wallagrass man and a St. Elzear, Quebec, man were treated for injuries at Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle and released after a two-truck accident Thursday afternoon on Route 11.

The accident remains under investigation, but it appears that charges may be pending against Herman Caron, 50, of Wallagrass for unsafe backing of a vehicle on a curve, according to Ashland Police Chief Keith Bishop.

Caron reportedly was headed south driving a 1978 International truck loaded with firewood and owned by Powell Memorial Center of Eagle Lake. At about 2:15 p.m., he stopped the truck in the roadway about three miles south of the village and attempted to back across the northbound lane into a driveway to deliver the wood when the accident occurred, according to Bishop.

Jean Paul Vexina, 54, of St. Elzear, Quebec, also was headed south, driving a 1988 Ford tractor-trailer with an empty flatbed when he came upon Caron.

A curve in the road prevented Vexina from seeing the Caron vehicle. The tractor-trailer hit the wood truck from behind and pushed it into a north-lane ditch, spilling nearly two cords of wood, according to Bishop.

Neither driver was a wearing seat belt, said Bishop.

The tractor-trailer was a total loss, and the wood truck received about $5,000 damage to the right and back sections, said Bishop.
