Hermon residents urged to recycle Christmas trees

HERMON — Don’t put that Christmas tree out by the curb with your trash. It costs the town money in disposal fees.

Instead, drop it off in back of the parking lot behind the Hermon Municipal Building any time through January. The tree may be taken to the transfer station off New Boston Road during its regular hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, or Sunday, Jan. 8.

The town will chip the trees and then give them to townspeople for gardening or use them in public works projects. Residents who would like to receive chips may contact the town office at 848-3485 to be put on a waiting list.

All of the trees dropped off will count toward the town’s recycling rate which is up to 30 percent this year, compared to 19.8 percent last year.

Town Manager Kathryn Ruth said last month that the town should be proud of that increase, and that a big push for recycling might bring the town up to the 35 percent the state wants to see.

Brochures on recycling are available at the town office.
