High-speed chase in Camden ends in farm pond

CAMDEN — A brief high-speed chase on Sunday morning ended abruptly in a farm pond, Camden police reported.

Police said a car driven by Joel G. Wentworth, 23, of Union was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed in the village area at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. When a cruiser tried to stop the vehicle, it sped off up Mechanic Street.

The cruiser backed off as the chase headed up Upper Mechanic Street past a sharp turn. When the cruiser rounded the curve, officer Alan King spotted taillights in a field on the left side of the street. Police discovered the car had slid off the road into a farm pond. The car was afloat when officers arrived.

Officer King waded and then swam to the floating car and got Wentworth out of it.

Once ashore, Wentworth was charged with attempting to elude an officer and driving to endanger. Wentworth was uninjured.

On Saturday morning, Camden police charged Donald A. Sykes, 22, of Searsport with criminal speeding after he was recorded on radar doing 86 mph in a 50 mph zone on Route 1, near the Birches Motel. Police said another car was also involved in the incident. The investigation is continuing.

When the speed limit is exceeded by more than 30 miles per hour, the charge becomes criminal speeding and the penalties are substantially more severe, police said.
