Making Stowe arrangements

The options for skiing, lodging and dining at Stowe present a pleasant predicament. Several lift areas are scattered across two mountains, each area having its own base lodge. The good news is that they’re all interconnected by convenient shuttle buses.

Stowe Mountain Resort offers a range of accommodations at the base of Mount Mansfield. Although pricier than similar lodging in the nearby village of Stowe, the advantage is that you’re right at the mountain, ready to ski. Choose from the AAA four-diamond Inn at the Mountain, the Stowe Mountain Resort Townhouses or Lodge Condominiums.

For information and slope-side reservations call 1-800-253-4SKI, or write Stowe Mountain Resort, 5781 Mountain Road, Stowe, Vt. 05672-4890.

If you don’t mind a 10- or 15-minute drive to the slopes, the village of Stowe and its environs have an assortment of premium resorts and lovely country inns. The Stowehof Inn is a secluded inn with panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The Stoweflake Inn & Resort is an elegant intown resort serving afternoon tea in a spacious living room. Individual rooms have handmade comforters and curtains. These and other establishments offer exceptional bargains with five- and seven-day packages combining lodging and lift tickets. Some offer meal plans. On five- and seven-day packages, children 12 and under ski and stay free with each paying parent.

Smugglers’ Notch specializes in family vacations and “guarantees fun for kids.” If your child doesn’t have fun, you get his or her portion of the vacation refunded. The resort is a self-contained village with privately owned condominiums for rent, ranging from single-room units to larger units with fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs. All units are within 250 yards of ski lifts. Full child care facilities are available for children including infants as young as 6 weeks.

The village has several casual-dining restaurants and cafeterias. I started my day at the Club Cafe’s breakfast buffet and fueled my afternoon skiing excursion at their pasta bar.
