CASTINE — The town of Castine has joined the state and federal governments as an official partner in the preservation of historic places.
The National Park Service and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission approved Castine in November as a certified local government under the National Historic Preservation Act.
The certification has allowed Castine officials to enter a formal partnership with the state and federal governments to identify and preserve historic places.
The partnership extends technical assistance to the town and makes it eligible for a pool of competitive grants through the Federal Historic Preservation Fund.
Castine joins municipalities like Bangor, Hampden and Topsham by becoming one of eight certified local governments in the state.
