West teams beat up East

Western Maine teams dominated field hockey action Saturday as all three state field hockey championships were won by western champs in overtime at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham.

South Portland took the Class A crown with a 1-0 decision over Skowhegan. In Class B, undefeated Leavitt Area of Turner earned a 2-1 victory over Messalonskee of Oakland.

In boys soccer, Mt. Ararat of Topsham upended Portland 1-0 for the Class A championship, while Wiscasset downed Piscataquis Community of Guilford 4-0 for the C title.

Greely of Cumberland won the girls Class A crown with a 3-0 victory over Cony of Augusta.

Field hockey

South Portland 1, Skowhegan 0

Debbie Ackerley scored the game’s lone goal with 2 minutes left in the second overtime as the Red Riots made amends for losing Class A title matchups to the Indians in 1991 and ’92.

Goalie Robyn Williams made eight saves on eight shots for 16-1-1 South Portland.

For Skowhegan, which finished 14-3-1, Danielle Burke made three saves on four shots.

Leavitt 2, Messalonskee 1

Caroline Coyne ended the drama just 40 seconds into the second overtime with a 25-foot blast off Holly Catlett’s assist that gave the Hornets the B state title.

Liz Healy scored the other goal for 16-0 Leavitt off a pass from Sheila Gordon. Jessica Hunter made four saves on six shots in goal.

Tee Bragg staked the 15-3 Eagles to a 1-0 lead in the first half. Ally Nye had the assist. Jess Desrosiers nade nine saves on 15 shots.

Boys soccer

Wiscasset 4, Piscataquis 0

At Ellsworth, senior striker Eric York stole the show, pounding home three goals and assisting on the other to power Class C Wiscasset to its first-ever boys state soccer title.

Senior striker Alan Moeller scored the other goal for Wiscasset which finished its season 16-1. The Redskins did not surrender a goal during the playoffs.

Wiscasset outshot Piscataquis Community of Guilford 26-15, dominating play and keeping the ball in the PCHS end for much of the game. Redskin sophomore goalie Tom Deschaine made seven saves.

For PCHS, which finished 16-2, sophomore goalie Tony Draper made 13 saves including several grade A stops.

Mt. Ararat 1, South Portland 0

At Cape Elizabeth, Mt. Ararat of Topsham got a goal from David Taft with 30:02 left in the game and held on to beat the previously undefeated Bulldogs.

Taft’s goal was a 35-yard direct kick that cleared the goalie and nestled into the top right corner of the net.

Derek DeHaan made seven saves on 12 shots for 15-3 Mt. Ararat. Jesse Connolly made nine saves on 17 shots for 15-1-2 Portland.

Girls soccer

Greely 3, Cony 0

At Cape Elizabeth, Kerry Stoddard and Bridget Foley headed in goals off corner kicks by Samantha Preston as the Rangers capped a 16-1 season with their first girls Class A crown.

Erica Frank scored the other goal for Greely off a corner kick by Stoddard. Jessica Whitten and Lisa Wells made six saves on eight shots.

Rae-Ann Demos made 15 stops on 22 shots in net for the 13-4-1 Rams.
