Jamieson helps Rams roll past Bulldogs 34-14

FAIRFIELD – Followers of high school, especially those with an interest in the Pine Tree Conference, who might still be wondering how good the Bangor High School Rams COULD be this season, only had to take one look out onto Lawrence High’s Keyes Field here to find a possible answer.

All facets of the Rams’ game showed up on a misty Friday evening, dismantling the host Bulldogs by a 34-14 score.

Offensively, the Rams amassed 386 total yards. Senior tailback Josh Jamieson led the charge with 196 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns on runs of 54, 28, and 28 yards. Quarterback Mark McEwen picked up 140 more yards – and a game-opening touchdown – through the air.

When Lawrence had the ball, Bangor’s defense picked off four passes and recovered one fumble while only allowing the Bulldogs two extended drives.

Bangor moved to 3-0 with the win while Lawrence slipped to 1-2.

Postgame, Bangor coach Gabby Price was pleased.

“All in all, I thought the kids played really hard,” Price said. “I thought Josh Jamieson had his best game for us. He did fantastic.”

Before Jamieson could take center stage, however, McEwen teamed up with junior split end Mike Pelkey to get Bangor on the board.

On the game’s opening play, McEwen went deep, hitting Pelkey on the run for a 65-yard scoring strike, giving Bangor a 7-0 lead.

Lawrence hung tough for a quarter before two quick TDs by the Rams turned the game around early in the second.

Jamieson opened the second quarter with an 8-yard run and followed that with a 54-yard jaunt off end, breaking two tackles, and cutting outside before finding the end zone.

Three plays into Lawrence’s next drive, Chris Vigue fumbled and Bangor’s Chris Wright recovered.

Three Jamieson carries later, Bangor was again in the end zone, finally on a 28-yard sweep. Andy Robichaud’s third PAT made it 21-0.

After Lawrence went on a 9-play, 67-yard scoring drive, capped when Travis Bucks scampered in from three yards out, Bangor’s defense had to come up big twice.

On the ensuing squib kickoff, Bangor fumbled with Lawrence recovering.

The Rams defense held on four plays, forcing Lawrence to punt.

McEwen then threw an interception, giving Lawrence the ball again.

On the very next play, Pelkey picked off a Kyle Holstrom pass, securing Bangor a 21-7 halftime lead.

“There were two key points,” said Lawrence coach Pete Cooper. “One was following our first touchdown when we had two opportunties to do something and the other was at the start of the second half when we got the ball and couldn’t move it. Bangor was the better team, but I’m proud of the way my kids played.”

Josh Morse later scored on a 19-yard run and Jamieson capped off his day with another 28-yard TD run to blow the game away.

“I stand back there, seven yards behind him, and I watch him run and it’s like, `Great! First down!’ Then, POW!, he’s gone. It’s bang-bang, he’s in the end zone. It’s fun to watch,” Morse said.

“Coach was on me all week about running hard,” said Jamieson. “I came out and really wanted to run hard. That’s what I did. The line did a great job opening holes.”

Defensively, Bangor gave up 209 yards – 115 of which came on Lawrence’s two scoring drives.

In addition to Pelkey’s pick, Josh Morse, Casey Cattell, and Fred Moore also recorded interceptions.

Richie Day recorded a team-high 11 tackles while linebackers Morse and Kevin Dunton each dragged down six players.

Jamieson also got his hand into the action defensively, with a pair of TD saving tackles from behind.

Bangor’s win did come at a price, however. Pelkey suffered a broken thumb and is out for an undetermined time while James Pelletier aggrivated a sprained ankle, and McEwen suffered a bruise knee. McEwen and Pelletier aren’t expected to miss any action.
